"Wes is in town." I couldn't breathe. The air inside the car was growing thinner and thinner. My lungs were crashing into each other, and I felt like I was on a carousel, because there were a million thoughts spinning around in my head.
"What did you just say?" I tried to search my mother's eyes, but they were glued to the road. "What did you just say, mom?" The blood drained from my face, and I could feel my nails biting into my palms. I winced slightly at the pain, but it was nothing compared to what I was feeling right now.
"I saw his mother at the grocery store the other day. They moved into the old Windsor house. You know the one..." she started.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I looked at her. I really looked at her. There were creases in her lightly tanned forehead, and her raven-black hair was streaked with silver. She looked tired. As if, like me, she was carrying the world on her shoulders. Considering how I have been acting these past couple of years, I would believe her if she said she did.
