2.1.13

It's been a while since I participated in this but to those who don't know Road Trip Wednesday is a blog carnival hosted by the lovely bloggers over at YA Highway. Every Wednesday a question is asked and bloggers are invited to answer the question on their own respective blogs.

This week's topic:

What was the best book you read in December?

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grow dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

I didn't do a lot of non-school related reading in December. When Finals week came there wasn't room for me to do anything but study, study, and do more studying. I was, however, able to finish two really good books last month. Though I loved Easy by Tammara Webber, I have to say that the Best Book of December Award goes to Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.

I started reading it a few months ago, and once I started school...reading really wasn't an option. I wanted to be able to fully enjoy Laini Taylor's beautiful writing, so I put off reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone until I was done with the first semester completely and could focus solely on reading this book.

Having never read anything written by Laini Taylor, I was taken away by her style of writing. The imagery jumped off the page, and the world she created was unlike anything I have ever experienced before. The setting, the characters, the mythology - all of it was intricately woven together to create a story love and loss. There is more to the story than that, but I don't want to give too much away. Just know that the main characters, Karou (who has crazy-awesome blue-hair btw) and Akiva are characters that will stay with you long after you finish reading the book.

This book is a new take on forbidden love and I loved every moment of it. If you have this on your TBR list or bought it a long time ago and haven't gotten around to reading it...READ IT. I wrote on Goodreads that "reading this book was like opening your eyes and seeing the sky for the first time" and it's so true.

So, what books did you read last month? Any of them take your breath away?

Thanks for reading!
